The 5th International Congress on Applied Ichthyology, Oceanography, and Aquatic Environment (HydroMediT 2024) will take place in Mytilene (Greece), at the hospitable island of Lesvos, from the 30th of May to the 2nd of June 2024, in the premises of the University of the Aegean. The event is organized within the framework of the AII Greek Chairmanship.

AII Webinar on Enhancing Regional Cooperation for Natural Disaster Response - 27 November 2024 (online)

The Greek Presidency of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative (2024-2025) recently hosted a webinar on "Enhancing Cooperation and Assistance in Case of Natural Disasters" on November 27, 2024. Organized by the Hellenic Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, this event brought together experts and representatives from across the Adriatic-Ionian region to address growing challenges posed by natural disasters, such as forest fires.

AII Round Table on Connectivity – 13 March 2025, Athens

The Adriatic Ionian Initiative (AII) Round Table titled “Promotion of Connectivity as a Vital EU Enlargement Tool – Challenges and Opportunities of the Western Balkans – Eastern Mediterranean European Transport Corridor”  will be held in Athens on Thursday, 13 March 2025, from 11:00 to 14:00 (UTC+02:00). The event will explore the role of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) in strengthening EU connectivity and addressing key transport challenges in the region.

Meeting with the European Commission: Strengthening Regional Cooperation, Ancona - 25 March

The Permanent Secretariat of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative (AII) recently hosted an important meeting with Gilles Kittel (DG REGIO, European Commission), MEP Carlo Ciccioli, representatives of the Marche Region, and the three Fora of Civil Society (Forum of Chambers of Commerce, Forum of Cities, and UniAdrion). This strategic discussion focused on the future of regional cooperation within the framework of the EU Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Region (EUSAIR). The meeting, open to the Fora of Civil Society (Forum of the Adriatic Ionian Chambers of Commerce, Forum of the Adriatic Ionian Cities and UniAdrion, network of the Adriatic Ionian Universities), featured a presentation of the new "Revised Action Plan" of the EUSAIR Strategy, highlighting key updates from the previous version. Special attention was given to youth engagement, with UniAdrion playing an active role, and to the "DO-AIR Observatory" project, introduced by the Forum of Chambers of Commerce. Developed in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Marche, this strategic tool provides in-depth socio-economic data analysis for the Adriatic-Ionian region, supporting infrastructure planning and maritime traffic monitoring. In addition, discussions were held regarding possible synergies between the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative and the EUSAIR Strategy, particularly in light of the upcoming presidency of North Macedonia. These potential collaborations will further enhance the effectiveness of regional cooperation and the successful implementation of shared goals. This meeting served as a crucial platform for dialogue and collaboration, reaffirming the shared commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and ensuring the effective implementation of the EUSAIR Strategy.

AII Workshop on Decarbonization of the Shipping Industry and the Role of Ports in the Adriatic-Ionian Region - 29 April 2025, Piraeus (Greece)

Within the framework of the Hellenic Presidency of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative, the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy is organizing a workshop on: “Decarbonization of the Shipping Industry and the Role of Ports in the Adriatic-Ionian Region” Date: 29 April 2025 Time: 10:00–13:30 (local time) Location: Piraeus, Greece – hybrid format The event will feature three round-table discussions and will bring together key stakeholders, policymakers, and experts from the region to discuss: Challenges and perspectives for the greening of the shipping industry in the Adriatic-Ionian Region The role of ports in decarbonizing the maritime sector Overcoming barriers and enabling regional cooperation Further information and the detailed agenda will be circulated soon.

Save the Date – Conference on Climate Resilience Policies for Coastal Cultural Heritage in the Adriatic-Ionian Region - 16–18 May 2025, Kastoria (Greece)

The Hellenic Ministry of Culture, in the framework of the Hellenic Chairmanship of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative (AII) and the Hellenic Presidency of the EU Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Region (EUSAIR), is organizing a conference on “Climate Resilience Policies for Coastal Cultural Heritage in the Adriatic-Ionian Region”, which will take place in Kastoria, Greece, from 16 to 18 May 2025. The event will focus on the challenges posed by climate change to cultural heritage located along coastlines or underwater, with the aim of contributing to the development of effective prevention and adaptation strategies and enhancing cooperation among the countries of the Adriatic-Ionian Region. Main themes of the conference include: Predicting and assessing the impacts of climate change on coastal cultural heritage; Building protection and adaptation strategies; Promoting cultural heritage as a resource for climate mitigation and sustainable development. The conference will also explore best practices, local knowledge and innovation in the field, and opportunities for cross-border collaboration in emergency response and resilience building.
